Natural Terra Cooler, as the name suggests, is a refrigerator that doesn't require electricity to keep food cool. By revisiting the traditional use of red clay containers for food preservation, the project explores innovative ways to adapt this material for modern applications.
Ana Lisboa and Sara Baptista da Silva developed the project.
The design features three overlapping containers, each serving a distinct function. The outer container triggers the cooling effect in the inner container, which maintains a lower temperature for food storage compared to the outside environment. This allows food placed in the interior container to stay cooler for longer periods.
The outer piece serves as a vase for aromatic plants, while the middle piece holds sand (or other materials like earth, perlite, etc.) that absorbs water and keeps it moist for longer. The inner piece is designed to store food. It's a versatile pot that allows users to plant, harvest, and store their food all in one functional design.
